The first factory to produce solar panels in Viet Nam started up in Duc Hoa Industrial Park in southern Long An province on April 27.
The factory, owned by the Red Sun Energy Joint Stock Company (RedSun), will soon market its solar panels at a price about 30-40 percent lower than similar imported products.
According to RedSun’s General Director Diep Bao Canh, the solar panels have the capacity to produce between 80Wp-165Wp of power and will last for 25 years. During the first phase from 2009-2010, the factory will manufacture products that can generate 5MWp or 4 million kWh of electricity a year.
In the 2nd phase, the factory will raise its capacity to produce panels that will be able to produce 25MWp a year, with some of the raw materials needed to produce the panels available domestically. Nearly 40 percent of the panels produced are expected to be sold on the home market while the remaining 60 percent will be for export.
RedSun also produces LED bulbs and traffic lights which use solar panels and designs, produces and assembles other energy saving products such as solar water heating systems, compact fluorescent lamps and other products.
RedSun is the result of a joint initiative between Ho Chi Minh City and the Rhone-Alpes region of France and intends to lay the foundations of Vietnam’s solar cell industry.
